This neoclassical style building was designed by Italian architects, constructed in the early 20th century, and opened in December 1908. It owes its name to the Yucatán poet, novelist, playwright, medical doctor, and politician José Peón Contreras (1843–1907). Today, it is the most prominent cultural center in the state, hosting national and international events, plays, operas, concerts, dance performances, variety shows, and children’s shows, as well as festivals and conferences.
